Social media is such a powerful tool when used properly but so many people are misusing it. They set up these automated tweets that constantly spew self-promotions about their business and products. Social media sites are becoming cluttered with more spam than our inboxes.

The right way to use social media is to engage people in conversations as you would at a networking event or cocktail party. Show genuine interest in others without selling and they will become your friend and eventually a client. Never, ever try to sell anything on social media sites.

So many people use social media to blast self-promotions everywhere and never engage in any real conversation. I wonder if they attend networking events and cocktail parties screaming "Buy my product, buy my product, buy my product" and wonder why nobody every buys?

I spotted your revolution right away and knew I had to be a part of it. I am trying in my own way to utilize social media to get the word out about the reality of addictions of all types and the way it is impacting not only the lives of those afflicted, but society as a whole. Addiction has impacted our health, health care system, our brains, our criminal justice system, our cities, towns, neighborhoods and our families. Our children have been hit the hardest. I am open to dialogue about this with anyone interested in helping me create a paradigm shift in the world of addictions.

I like Dick Carlson's comment below, social media for the unsocial. I (and a lot of people around me) fit into this category. How many of your friends would prefer to text you instead of calling, or post to FaceBook rather than call or write. Curious how someone's doing, you don't even need to interact with them, just Twitter.

It sounds like I'm against social networking. I'm not, it's just a new (and interesting) paradigm.

I currently believe that "The War on Drugs" ie (Prohibition) is our Societies greatest unanswered question (problem) It amounts to the reinstatement of Slavery in the United States today. The casualties in this "War" are not only the mostly young minorities arrested but more important perhaps their extended families and children and the young government lawyers and law enforcement personnel who prosecute them (AUSA's & Cops). Like FDR ended alcohol prohibition we of this generation must end the rest of prohibition NOW. Contact me, I have a talking book on this. I need your help.

Its important to think big about social networking. The questions that should be answered can grow along the lines of generating revenue from these outside of advertising and membership fees. That is a holy grail that can only be answered by thinking bigger. If anyone has thoughts or ideas about this i would love to open a dialogue.

I have been experimenting with social media of late. Still resisting Facebook. The experiment revolves around the CD/download I released in September. I have a full time job that I love and music is my passion.
Recently my wife came up with the idea of a free download for valentines day. I have resisted this giving away of music to date but decided it is time to experiment further.

I am amazed at the results so far even though my reach is not that great. But slowly word spread. Feel free to stop by and have a listen. Scattered Hearts.

I'm not at all social in the real world -- I attend lots of shows and conventions, present and teach -- but I find myself pretty uncomfortable with the cocktail hours and meet-n-greets that are required of the speakers.

Virtual social groups, on the other hand, are just fine. Anyone else experience this phenom?
