All About the Little Things

I’ve been reflecting on some wonderful key learnings this past month. I had the privilege of hearing a CEO in Edmonton speak about positioning a company after the tragic loss of the leadership team in a plane crash. He earnestly spoke about what was really important for a thriving company culture; interestingly enough it wasn’t about the big things. That very same week I heard Seth Godin speak about what companies need to focus on when building a…See More

Leadership today is about joining the conversation

Do you ever wonder about the experiences that impact how you think, act or move forward? Generally these experiences are not huge moments in our lives but have the potential to make significant changes. It seems this past week was one of those moments in time where a simple encounter challenged my thoughts on leadership.I had the privilege of having lunch with Michael Drew this past week. A person not familiar to me in my world. In fact, it was a situation that for most would seem coincidental…See More

What qualities does it take to be a great leader?

GreetingsWell, it seems that I just can't get away from the topic of leadership. As I continue to work with some of my clients to define successful leadership, we always end up coming back to the same questions: What qualities does it take to be a great leader? Are leaders born? Can they be nurtured? It’s such a complex subject. There has been so much written on the topic, and so much research undertaken. And we’ve learned even more through trial and error. That said, I’ve decided to share with…See More

Greetings

Well, it seems that I just can't get away from the topic of leadership. As I continue to work with some of my clients to define successful leadership, we always end up coming back to the same questions: What qualities does it take to be a great leader? Are leaders born? Do you have the audacity to learn from your mistakes?

Posted on July 6, 2009 at 11:13pm 0 Comments

We've all heard the age old adage “learn from your mistakes” but do we really make the effort to go back and ask what went wrong? If we could do it again what would we do differently? What would we change? Given my years in healthcare and patient safety, I’m convinced that any sort of “post event review” encourages learning and breeds excellence. I believe in this strategy so strongly I’m sure it is embedded in my DNA. It is one of the first areas I look at when working with companies wanting… Continue

Being Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

Posted on June 27, 2009 at 12:04pm 0 Comments

For most of us (not all) there is this insidious voice inside our heads questioning everything we do, say or even feel. Those questions have the audacity to limit our ability to dream big. I don’t know how we got to this point but we must get over it. For the precious time we live on this earth as human beings, our purpose is to grow. We are physically and mentally designed to evolve. If everything we desire could be achievable with great ease how would we ever advance? Better yet, would we… Continue

Hi Bea, I noticed you are a fellow Canadian and just wanted to say hello. I have been thinking alot recently about the public education system as I just recently had my first child. I see you like M.Gladwell. I felt the sudden urge to get his book a few months ago (the Tipping Point) at a stopover in a New Jersey Airport and went to a newstand, picked up the book, looked up and saw Malcolm standing right in front of me - needless to say he signed my book and I have been a fan ever since. How are you Bea!
So sorry for not getting back to you sooner. To be honest I am just new to this social networking and learning so much, yet feeling overwhelmed by meeting so many wonderful people and learning so much.

What am I up too! Beside the fact of getting overwhelmed with social networking. I am working on establishing my own business. I am participating in Michael Port's Book Yourself Solid course. I am starting from scratch, with a empty slate. I find the process very exciting! Exciting and what a wonderful time to create a business.

I am learning so much from your articles, I hope you don't mind if I keep reading them.

Bea, you write so clearly, thank you for your postings.

Edmonton, I have had the pleasure of being in Edmonton many times. Cold city, very beautiful city a city certainly worth seeing.

Bea, may I ask about your passion to write the Manifesto Posts?

Bye for now.

Hi Bea

Thank you for your reply.

A lot of big thinkers around me. No in fact I have a job in which I work with small thinkers. Well they are probably no different to anyone else, just that the more I participate in the Think Big network the bigger my ideas are getting and the bigger my actions are getting that I am feeling frustrated at work.

I am currently doing Michael Ports Book Yourself Solid course which is providing me with the action steps to establish my own business. I have established www.advancedfacilitators.com which is a network for Advanced Facilitators and a network to let people know about PSCYH-K. Ideas I would not have pursued as quick as I have without knowing big thinkers like on this network.

Thank you for asking!

I would love to know more about you.

I can truly understand your position on public schools and the general lack of positively based teaching combined with real world application of principles. Unfortunately the "fact" based assembly line learning process seem to be the accepted norm.

My general feeling is that left to its own devices the public system is doomed for continued failure....

But here is the great news about that. Private individual and small businesses that want to truly contribute to the education community can take charge in one of several ways. I will give one personal and one business item as a general example that may or may not apply to you specifically.

As a disgruntled but Big Thinking Parent offer to teach a short informative, relevant class about a subject of interest or life skill after school one day. If it is fun and informative the kids will promote it through their own Facebook-twitter etc networks, could turn into something more regular. When is the last time kids actually communicated on how to get into a classroom?

As a disgruntled but Big Thinking Educator refine your skills, shed your fears and adopt either a small private learning center or home schooling model. The public system may have dampened your fire but your soul is still ablaze. Once you are comfortable marketing your own self and able to utilize all your talents then you will thrive and your student will finally learn.
