Compromise-Is It Valueable or An Excuse

When I grew up it was often said "Learn to compromise, you will be happier". Now, while I agree it does not always serve your purpose to take a stand of resistance just to be resistant...I do not agree in compromising to make peace. I see it as the slippery slope that can take away your ability to make clear decisions and stand for what is important to you.

Now, I am first to admit I am not infallible and leave my ego at the door. I know that we are here to think big and stretch each other by engaging in spirited and respectful debate and conversation.

Tell me your thoughts on compromise. Does it serve you in your business and life or is it an escape route for making a decisions.

This will be an interesting conversation...

Hi MIchele, my thoughts on comprpmise will vary based on the subject matter. In the statement, "we've reached a compromise" I feel both sides make a decision for how little they can sacrifice and still reach an agreement and still get what they want. However, if one side is giving more than the other then there is no compromise. It has to do with exchange. There are 4 conditions of exchange. The first is rip off. This occurs when there is a heavy imbalance to one side e.g. You paid for a diamond and got coal. The next one is partial exchange where you paid for the diamond and got a diamond but not what you picked or wanted. Next is fair exchange where you bought a diamond and you got exactly that. Finally, and this leads to more customers than you could possibly believe is exchange in abundance. You bought a diamond and got the diamond plus a mont blanc pen with free delivery and a gift certifiate for dinner.
