The Think Big Revolution

We did great at the best of the best youth wrestling tournament last sunday at the Maple Shade High School. 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 3 bronze. Our 103 pounder and our 125 pounder took home gold. our 130 pounder took home silver, Our 120 pounder, our 115 pounder, and our defending champion -our 65 pounder also took home the bronze. The other two individuals that we took to the best of the best lost the first round. The good news is that they both have another chance to win the best of the best next year.

I told my 103 pounder to focus on winning the tournament, not on beating your opponent, or worrying about how good he is. One of my 103 pounder's opponent from Irish that he wrestled in the semi-finals defeated the kid from irish in sudden overtime. After the kid from irish lost, he had the audacity to approach me freaking out on me, shook my hand and said " you tell your wrestler that he kept scratching my face.!!" Then he turned around and threw down his head gear. I forgave him. He's just was very emotional thats all because he lost. And this kid was the number one seed and my 103 lber beat him. Our defending champ-our 65 pounder's first match in the semi -finals was against the kid from paulsboro. The kid was much taller and virtuallly twenty pounds heavier. They could not find a guy who was closest to my wrestler's weight. The individuals who created the brackets had my guy rated at 81 pounds. He ended up getting pinned. Thats ok because he has another chance to win the best of the best again next season.

Our 130 pounder's first match was against the kid from cinnaminson. At first, our guy picked his opponent up and slammed him kind of hard. My head coach and I told him that he was not allowed to do that . He understood what we told him, calmed down, gotten his focused back, and went ahead and pinned him in the first period. That win advanced him to the finals against the kid from Paulsboro. I only coached my 125 pounder's gold metal match against the kid from Egg Harbor. I think that my guy did not break a sweat. He virtually played with his opponent and wind up pinning his opponent in less than a minute.

My 103's gold metal match was against the kid from washington township. Before this match, I was pacing back and forth in front of him. I told my wrestler to "stay focused on winning the tournament." "On your feet, you want to always keep moving your opponent." "you want to dominate your opponent on your feet at all times." "On the top position, work those cradles and those pinning combinations."On the bottom position, you want to keep moving and scrambling, hand control, head is always up, and you do not stop moving, keep scoring and attacking." "If you do these three things, you'll win this tournament!" he went out there, and did exactly what I instructed him to do. As the result, a gold metal around his neck. I was picturing in my mind My 103 pounder winning the tournament, getting his hand raised, and winning the gold metal WHILE I was pacing back and forth in front of him breaking down what he has to focus on and what he needed to do to win. I'm very proud of my 103 pounder. I grabbed him, hugged him, and picked him up over my right shoulder. Everybody was hugging and congradulating him, I.E. us coaches, his friends and loved ones. I told my wrestler how proud I was of him with my arms wrapped around his chest as we were walking out the gymnasium. I then told him that I knew he could do it, I believed in him, and never doubted him. Folks, I loved it very much.

What was funny about this tournament was that I was kind of nervous alittle bit at the beginning. I felt like I was going to wrestle. Then I told myself to "stay relaxed." "Don't be nervous, be ready." So I started to focus on being ready and not on being nervous.

Our 130 pounder wrestled the kid from paulsboro for the gold. One of my wrestler's fingers on his right hand kept bleeding. I guess because he tore a nail. My assistant coach and I kept stopping the match for blood time and tapped his finger up. This went on about two to three times. At the end, our wrestler lost the match. I believe it was 9-1 or 10-2. He ended up taking silver.

Our 120 pounder lost in the quarter finals. He was killing his opponent too. I admit, my wrestler made some mistakes. One mistake he made is he let go of the cradle. Another mistake was he cradled too high, another mistake, when he had his opponent on his back, he left his right hand under his opponent's shoulder blade. If my wrestler would of moved that hand, he would have pinned him. My wrestler put this guy on his back five times. Then he got rerolled onto his back and got pinned. Then my wrestler went on and won his next match to take home the bronze. My wrestler's opponent was from egg harbor.

Our 115 pounder won his first two matches with a pin with a far-side cradle. he lost his third match with a pin fall, and won his last match and took home the bronze. Our coaching staff were very excited. I coached very fierce. I was viscious as hell and it paid off. The atmosphere in this tournament was very intense- it was raw. Attitude was all over the place, confrontations were taking place as well against other coaches, against the referees, against the parents of our wrestlers, etc... It was crazy. Hey, thats the best of the best for you.

Out of our eight wrestlers we took to the best of the best, we won six metals overall. Thats way more than last year. Last year, we only had 1 gold metal winner, and 1 bronze. Last year, we took five wrestlers to the best of the best.

Well. That is all that I have for today. Thank you for reading these powerful words. You have a much better wealthier day.
