Leading and Learning
After a recent speech on Think Big Manifesto a woman slipped me a note.
It was a poem by Natasha Josephowitz.
My right hand is held
by someone who knows more
and I am learning
My left hand is held
by someone who knows less
and I am teaching
Both my hands must be held
for me to be

The future belongs to the learner. The future belongs to the leader. We must be both to create an expansive and collaborative world in which all people have the opportunity for full self-expression.

I'm reading this after a day of sharing with my nine year old son what I am learning in a course with Debbie Ford. He responded with such wisdom and insight of his own. Thank you for sharing.

It is indeed a wonderful poem. It strikes me in reading other people's comments how everyone here "gets" that we must be lifelong learners to ever become mentors and teachers ourselves and that there is learning to be had from everyone and around every corner What makes me sad is to to think of people I have worked for over the years who do not get this and who are threatened by new ideas and creative problem solving. I guess the trick is to somehow model the openness and creative energy and realize there are still lessons to be learned from them(even if I did get crazy and insanely frustrated when having to work for them!)

There is a Jewish teaching that this poem reminded me of. It says that teaching others is such an important task that you must not wait until you have finished learning something to start teaching it.

Wow, very profound, genuine and complete in thought and definition. It is a beautiful tool for us all to view how life should be lived...not solely, but collectively.

In my opinion, Natasha seems to be acknowledging an inner awaken wisdom channeling interdependency shared from one person to another...it's the experience of a life long learner with the intent to reach self actualization with whatever resources readily available...do it.
