The Think Big Revolution

... staying focused.

Wait. What was I going to say? Oh, yeah...

... staying focused.

At the beginning of each new year everyone and their brother has a message on how to make the new year better than the last. Well, I don't believe
in "New Year's Resolutions." Instead, I believe in small shifts every
day that lead to big changes and even bigger results over time.

To make small shifts we need to be able to focus on what's important.

If you're trying to make big things happen staying focused on "shipping" rather then thinking or creating is most important.

My mantra is that if it doesn't "ship" it doesn't count.

I don't mean shipping something just in the mail. For our purposes shipping is getting what we make into the hands of the users. That might mean
selling it, delivering it, donating it, or something else entirely.
Again, if it doesn't ship it doesn't count.

So, if you must have a New Year's Resolution, make it about staying focused on shipping, getting what you're making out into the real world so you can make your big dreams come true.

I love you very much (and not in a weird way) but for being the big thinker that you are.

The truest road to success is through continually shipping, and delivering on real needs. Seth Godin has told me this, you are telling me this... time to get my latest proposal out the door! Thanks for the reminder - I'm logging off now :-)

Cheers!

Michael, "shipping", for me is staying focused on the execution of my master plan, not giving credence or time to the "bright shiny" idea.  Bright shiny diversions can feel - temporarily - like progress, and often deceive me with a sense of "doing", yet I am actually avoiding the real doing.  Over time I have come to realize a sense of loss, having allowed myself to be small, and not large.  The discussion today will help me stay focused on what I really want, not on the lie of a bright, shiny object.

Thanks for the invitation to me who I am really meant to be, and serve those whom I am meant to serve.  A very different approach to business than the common perspective.
